This afternoon, the Islanders acquired Johnny Boychuk from the Boston Bruins in exchange for three draft picks.
Last season, Boychuk had 23 points in 75 games for the Bruins. Boychuk isn't really known for his offensive gifts though, more for his defense and ability to shutdown the other teams top players. Standing at 6'2 225 Boychuk also brings size to an Islanders back line that severely lacks it.
People shouldn't forget Boychuks enormous amount of playoff experience and how valuable that can be for a team that doesn't have many players with post season experience. Boychuk has 27 points in 79 career playoff games and also has a Stanley Cup ring from the Bruins win a couple years ago. These are things that although they don't show up on paper have a huge value for team.
If the Islanders were going to acquire one defenseman Boychuk was the guy for them. He brings a combination of size and skill the Islanders severely lack on the blueline and have lacked for sometime.
