Islanders Discussing Long Term Deal With Nick Leddy

According to the Ottawa Sun, the Islanders are discussing a long term extension with Nick Leddys camp.

In 56 games this season, his first with the Islanders, Leddy has accumulated 22 points in 56 games.  With 7 goals already on the season, Leddy has matched his career high in that category.  He has also been near the top of the team in terms of +/- all season as well.

The report speculates that Leddy is using the 5 year 27.5 million dollar contract Brooks Orpik got from the Capitals last summer to judge what he is worth.

While they may not be far off in the term as I think 5-6 years for Leddy is fair, the dollar amount seems high though.  For me, when I thought of Leddy and what he would get in terms of contract I always thought similar money to what the Islanders gave Travis Hamonic.  If you recall, that was a 7 year deal worth 27 million dollars.  That works out to 3.85 million dollars per season.  I could see Leddy getting a little more than that, maybe 6 years 25.5 million, but the Orpik contract was out of whack for Orpik and definitely would be for Leddy as well.
