Tonight, our Islanders completed a home and home sweep of the Ottawa Senators defeating them by a score of 2-1. This Islanders victory combined with the Penguins loss to Vancouver gave the Islanders sole possession of 1st place in the Metropolitan division. Here are some of my notes:
-Congrats to Jaroslav Halak for setting the Islanders record for consecutive wins by a goalie with 11.
-With the team missing half of our top 6 defensemen, tonight was a pretty solid overall defensive showing. To give up just 20 shots on net given those circumstances is impressive.
-The penalty kill was solid tonight. They did have one blemish with the Senators power play goal. However, it came because the team went down two men on a blown call by the official.
-Given all the time he sat out, Matt Donovan has fit nicely into the Islanders lineup with all the teams injuries.
-Although it hasn't hurt the team in the standings, the first lines lack of production is concerning.
Early on, it seems as though injuries up to this point can't stop this team. If the Islanders don't get healthier, Saturday will prove to be an even tougher test than it already would've been. However, given the teams play recently, if you are not confident that they are able to win any game no matter what the circumstances then I am not sure what to tell you.
Next Game: Saturday @ Home 1:00 vs St Louis
