3rd Period Onslaught Powers Isles Over Rangers 6-3

Tonight, after a lackluster start, the Islanders got it in gear in the third period and defeated the rival Rangers by a score of 6-3.  Here are some of my notes from the game:

-Even though he did give up a goal or two he probably wants back, Halak played excellent tonight.  If  not for him this is without a doubt would have been a loss for the Islanders.

-Brock Nelson continues his hot start, really awesome to see the kid coming of age before our eyes.  Beautiful work from his line to set up his goal

-Like Nelson, Tavares continues putting up points as well which is always a good thing.

-While there were many positives, there were negatives to.  The defensive pairing of Brian Strait and Griffin Reinhart had many issues tonight.  Strait continued his early season struggles.  I am curious if Matt Donovan will see some time on Thursday in his spot.  Meanwhile, Reinhart had fared pretty well in his first two games against Carolina.  Tonight though, his struggles were evident and was exemplified at times as it appeared as though Capuano had him riding the bench for a little while at points.

-Can't say enough about Johnny Boychuks shot, it is unbelievable!!

-Kulemin had a solid game to, first time on the young season that he has really stood out for me to.

Tonight, the Islanders had the chance to go and make a statement against their biggest rival and the defending Eastern Conference champions that all the hype and attention they have gotten is warranted.  While they did struggle in the first 40 minutes, they came out ready to play in the third and made that statement and then some.  With two tough games coming up, it will be interesting to see how the Islanders fare.

Next Game: Thursday @ Home Vs San Jose
